As a new blogger, I keep discovering interesting new projects and initiatives in the blogosphere. One such project is the weekly photo challenge series on WordPress. At first, I thought it’s only for serious photographers (there are some brilliant contributions every week), but then I discovered that it’s actually open to everyone and yet another great way to connect with other bloggersΒ while feeding one’s own creativity and having fun.
So, when I saw the weekly photo challenge theme for this week (“Face”), I immediately thought of the photos I recently took of street art in Mitchells Plain near Cape Town, and thought, what the heck, let’s join the party.
Isn’t it amazing?
Though I live only 20km from Mitchells Plain, a well-known so-called “coloured” neighbourhood on the Cape Flats, I visited it for the first time a few weeks ago when my husband showed me the school where he taught many years ago. On our way to the school, we drove past a wall with this incredible graffiti on it. I immediately made him stop so I could take some photos with my phone.
There is graffiti and then there is art. In my eyes, this is art – urban art!
There is some serious talent out there in Mitchells Plain and I can think of no better way to share these gems than with my first contribution to the weekly photo challenge series.

Thanks, Teresa!
It’s too bad that part of town is called “The Colored Part of Town”. I’m not knocking you, It’s just sad.
I know. It’s awful π The lingering legacy of Apartheid is terrible. It’s still called a township by many too…but I refused to use that word in my piece. This is a huge neighbourhood (you could really call it a town) with a vibrant community.
Good photos. They are very unique. Hope you keep participating in different blogging memes. I co-host a link up party of Thursdays. You are welcomed to join.
Thanks, Ruth. And thanks for letting me know about your linkup party. I will definitely check it out π
Incredible art! It’s fascinating what you can find in places you wouldn’t expect. These samples of street art are vibrant and evoke many emotions when you look at them.
